You will always be my greatest sugar rush, but when you're not around, there's always brownies and we'll be sitting in a tree.
That sugar rush that came with each reason to feast, from thanksgiving to Christmas and Easter. It was the sweetness combined with the sweetness of being with those you love - a chance to talk and reconnect, to strengthen bonds that matter.
Our bodies are sugar-loving machines, sugar turned into ATP as the energy currency of all our chemical reactions. Carbohydrates are the basic blocks of our biological molecules. So it's okay to eat carbs - bread is good, wheat products are good. All it takes is a little balance with other foods, with exercise and such. If you only have the occasional sugar rush, the occasional sugar fix, that's okay. Balance and consistency, food and exercise, food is fuel you put in your tank and then burn, that's it. Just eat, exercise and make time for fun. Happiness is key to so much of good health.
They say that the sugar rush is more a thing of myth than reality, that we make it true because we believe it is. The greater part of the sugar rush story is apparently the caffeine that comes in chocolate products. The slump that follows sweet food is real though, there is a sugar sleepiness that can follow. Yet I eat sweet foods in small amounts and so the effect is more as a summer sea wave rather than surfing down a giant crest.
I could never quite tell if the hot chocolate sugar rush was more the caffeine or the sugar, to be honest, I didn't really care. It was delish-delosh. It was a good-night hug in a clay cup.
