Amid a fleet of steel gated homes, upon a jaguar street, there was one ‘gap-tooth’ dark. From smashed panes had billowed the soot of dragon’s breath, to scorch and stain the well mortared brick. Its front door, though double layered, was a smash of craters; steel toed boots no doubt. Then to cap it all was the graffiti conjured in chaotic swirls. And so though it should have been the twin of all the rest, no fires warmed it, no lights came on at twilight’s whisper, no soles beat its floors.
If the friends from Friends can have a great space to live in, we can too. There's enough derelict buildings and enough talent to renovate them. It's time to get the materials, get the time, and get on with it. Find the real obstacles and get under, around or over them, because our communities matter. Derelict buildings, we make them homes.
We've got the skills in our town. We have enough construction workers and trades folks of all stripes. So all we needed to fix up our town for each other is the materials. So we focused on getting those, clubbing together, and we got to work. Once we all looked to football team, I guess we still do, but now it's all eyes on the construction team. We a real life renovation show here, no time for watching TV! Derelict buildings become our homes. Finally we are taking care of one another the right way and becoming firm friends.
A derelict building is one that is ready for reloving, or at least that is the way we see it. The walls are firm. The roof is easy to repair. New windows, new pipes, new wires, new floors... and it becomes a home for those who need a place to thrive and live real lives. We make new communities in places such a this. We build them. Rescued buildings rescue people. Then a derelict society becomes something beautiful, sustainable and good in the truest sense.
"Derelict" is such a harsh word. The house had been abandoned for sure. It was home to only the wildlife that sheltered within, those tiny heartbeats and tiny legs. Yet it stood in all weathers, as if there was a pride in its lasting, a sense of a strength that could be renewed at that asking. Some time, some love, and this could be a fine home once more.
