In the end days of the financial system, there was insufficient money in the lower half of society. No matter what people did, hunger and malnutrition set in. Crime rose. Trauma related to family disfuction rose. Costs associated with law and order rose. It was the start of a spiral into negative chaos. So we did what any good government would do. We stepped in as a food purchaser in the open market and filled the food banks, opened non-profit cafes that were free for children. It was the moral choice, but the costs of doing nothing was far higher.
The world weaponised hunger long ago and perhaps this why so many are reluctant to make food a human right, we do, after all, have a world of plenty. After all, why be a slave if you can have good food? Then you could focus on what's good for you, your family, your community, your nation and the globe.
There are hungers driven by cocktails of addictions and others by the absence of reasonable nutrition. Some struggle with advertisements for high salt, fat and sugar foods while others are left with choices to perform soul-shattering acts for the merest bite.
