"I shouldn't have to bleed to lead," said Charlie. "Love costs. Crime pays. Your soul is the gold you must never sell at any price. Hold on. Help others to hold on. Level up your character. Be proud of yourself. Feel your higher purpose."
A leader takes on discomfort to provide comfort, emotionally speaking. They take on a burden that frees others to have better lives and focus on the tasks society needs taking care of. It is a role, yet an important one. It is for the stoic not the egotist, the value driven lion-heart not the power-hungry chameleon. So ask yourself when you look the way of the podium, is that a leader or a parasite?
I swallow my own fear to expand the safe zone of others, to become the stoic leader they deserve.
I am the leader until you chose to follow another. That is how I see it. When it is time, other will come. We all have our time, we all pass on the light, that is the way things are.
You are a leader because we chose to follow you. We realise that you never sought to be one. We realise that what we give you is as much a responsibility as a blessing.
If I'm gonna be the serious leader, the one who walks to the most steady drum, that's alright. But, I am a clown too, that's another part of me that'll need room for expression and play. We are all complex and simple in these ways. Different needs arise and different times. We wear different hats for different roles. We switch gears, switch modes, switch operating systems... however you want to say it. If I have the room to remain my most ridiculous self in private, I can be your commander in public. Can't put a lid on funny. Just can't.
A leader is a listener. Make sure you listen to the heart. Make sure you listen to logic, to science and the philosophy of love. Make sure you listen to your own needs too. A leader needs to stay in good condition. Leading is a marathon, not a sprint.
I take the vantage point not from desire for victory as the ego-driven do, but rather from a sombre feeling of duty that is so solidly within my soul; strength and surrender come together for the wise, for we are only truly strong when we protect the vulnerable. A leader can walk ahead in times of trouble, to show the road forwards, and then in the good times walk behind in a role of support and steady nurture. Only this dynamic style can bring strength to the population, whom must always be developing the psychological maturity for leadership too.
We take our leaders from the bottom of society, those whom have survived the awfulness of pain and want, yet learned to become wise, empathic and self controlled despite their origins. As such we cannot have hereditary leadership such as royalty, for they are born at the top.
You've got what it takes. The greatest leaders in history had great big hearts such as yours, but they were realists too. They could use cold logic up against the worst of sociopaths, against those whom only crave money and power. Then, in a twinkle of an eye they are the beloved spirit of goodness everyone trusted and adored. Motives matter. Integrity and intention is everything. That you can dismiss intention to see the basic motives of the primitive brain, then layer on top the angelic motivations, control the former an encourage the latter, there's your true power. It's the power of love and all will fall before it because they want to. They want you to bring an orderly world of love and peace. So, be a hero, lead on.
Be a leader who is a servant - both 'tall' and humble. The wise chief is one who is so loved that the community come to them and ask the questions they need answers to. The leader's answers are wonderful and right because of their love for the community, because their only motivation is to help. That's why I want you to lead, to stand up tall, with all that love... and speak with a quiet voice that enables others and heals humankind.
"When you are so powerful, and you are with that pen of yours, you are the servant; a giant must lay themselves low and become the landscape for others to play on, as if they are not there at all. And a true master is happy to do so, to let them scale mountains and plant their flags of victory on lollipop sticks, smiles wide at being so very tall - those very clever girls and boys.
Those you see on the platforms, they wouldn't even be able to see over your baby toe if you really stood up... when a master leads, the people have no idea they are being led... and so your gift is your curse, your strength is your weakness, and I'm going to have to ask you to be so very humble and giving because there is no other good way out of this mess. You are "mother," telling them cute stories because that's what mother's do. They are the clever ones who will flaunt that they got there without your help, even as they bruise you and expect you to smile onwards.
For this job of saving them all, only you applied, foolish and brave, noble and so infinitely clever... your last lesson is humility... and as they take all the wheels you invented and claim them to be so very obvious... just remember that no matter how low you feel, you are a giant in my eyes... I see you there, crouching with that heart of pure love."
"Pete, I need you to calm that inner hurricane and think, for a thinking population is a free one. The rise of the machine has given us a decline of the body; the rise of the computer has given us a decline of the mind. Yet technology is only a tool, and we can choose to use it differently. That which subjugates us, can free us. There is real wisdom out there; seek and you shall find."
As Zac spoke his eyes followed the leaves on a tree outside, moving in a summer breeze. "Leaders are only leaders if you follow them. 'Just following orders' will never be an excuse again, not that it ever really was. Everything we do must be guided by love. Power is the poison in our veins, empathy is the antidote."
