Lily reached for another pizza slice when Dave decided that was his moment to vent. His face tightened and his voice projected somewhat more loudly than she would have expected him to in a public place. "I don't see why I should pay taxes to educate other peoples kids and pay their medical bills! I don't have kids. They should pay for themselves!" Lily stopped mid-chew and looked at Dave like she'd never really seen him properly before. She swallowed the food under-chewed and took a gulp of ice water.
"Dave, do you want to live in a country where poor kids die of preventable diseases, or poor women die in childbirth?"
Dave's voice dropped it's volume, "No."
"Do you want to live in a country where poor kids can't get an education and have nothing more to look forward to than a life of menial jobs no matter how intelligent they are?"
"No."
"Well then, I suggest you keep paying your taxes. Because it's these kids that will be the workers you need when you're old."
