My thanksgiving menu is either a curry or pizza joint takeaway menu... I know, call me old fashioned, but that's how we roll. I even fold the napkins real special and poor the beer into a glass. Now, I know it's a bit posh, but hey, my family is worth it.
This thanksgiving we gave thanks by sending a culturally appropriate menu of food to refugees, to those who had seen so much of hell and lived to tell the tale.
We couldn't believe it when a thanksgiving menu came through the door, some local rich guy was buying us all dinner, all delivered to our homes, all free. Apparently, there is such a thing as a free lunch.
Our thanksgiving menu was so bereft. Money has been so very tight this year. We've had so many illnesses, so much misfortune, as if the devil was there at every turn. But this year has become so different after the food donations flooded through. This year we ate better than I can ever remember, and it was all cooked for us too. There's something about that kind of charity that feels so loving. Perhaps we can start to believe again that we have a community, that being here together is a good thing.
We believe that to show you are thankful for what you have received, you must give to the less fortunate. It only seems right to pass on good luck and blessings you have been given. And so we make our thanksgiving menu not for ourselves yet for the poor and needy. We are content to eat the most humble of foods this thanksgiving, and on every other day, because it allows us to show the gratitude in our hearts and souls.
