"White knights," said Sarah, "in the form of real chivalry are a great benefit to society, however, when overdone it can inflict a damaging degree of helplessness in those who would be more comfortable being more self sufficient. Thus there is a balance to be struck between help and encouragement to do more independently and become stronger. As always, it is not one extreme or the other that shows the way, yet an intricate recipe of interactions led by the heart, instinct and intellect combined."
"The problem," said Ted, "when 'white knightism' becomes dominant, is that those perceived as 'bad' by basic binary thinking forms become tried and convicted of non-existent crimes in the eyes of the public very quickly. In essence, when out of kilter it can become a form of witch hunt."
"White Knight Addiction," said the professor, "comes in the 'Cinderella' form and the 'Knight in Shining Armour' form. While both can be very functional and cute when they come from pure and genuine emotions as a function of some personality types, when they run rampant in society as a standard model of behaviour they become problematic."
"White Knight Addiction," said Clarence, "comes in two forms. There is the form where one becomes addicted to being a 'white knight' and inserting oneself into battles or, often alas, inventing battles, to gain the thrill of 'riding to the rescue.' This form is also fuelled by the primitive need to be conspicuously belonging to some clan or tribe (these days often ideological). The second form is those addicted to being 'white knighted' and they love to step into the spotlight as a victim of some kind - again often an ideological crime in this mixed up age - yet also pose as one who doesn't want the attention and is all about love blah blah. The truth is, the ugly truth is, that both are playing a dangerous game. It is good to help others, it is good to accept needed help, this give and take is a cornerstone of healthy society, yet this white knighting addiction goes beyond that, it subverts and hinders logical thoughts and demands empathy is only ever granted from one perspective."
